RIM has 3 Last Minute Choices to Survive

Last week RIM announced that blackberry 10 devices will only be shipping in the first quarter of 2013. Now RIM has 3 choices to survive the first is to sell the company off, And Microsoft might be one of the buyers. The second choice is splitting the company int to two. The data network could be sold to Microsoft for their office 365 and will somehow end up in Nokia phones. Apple might also look in to buying their data network for their iMessage app. Or the last choice is do nothing and hopefully the launch of Blackberry 10 will save RIM. Click here to find out more

Phone Tech Update [Ep 6]

This week Google held their annual Developer's conference, at there they announced some new hardware as well as software. Click here for our wrap up of Google I/O. In Google I/O 2012 google announced its first ever tablet called the Nexus 7 made by Asus. Google is not going to stop there as consumers are hoping for a 10" nexus tablet. sources are casually mentioning that Wintek will be supplying 10" panels for another Nexus tablet, making it the largest Google supplier of slate displays whereas the rest of the 10-inchers are said to come from AU Optronics. We will most probably be seeing this 10" Nexus tablet hopefully by end of this year.
About 7 months ago Adobe announced that they are going to execute Adobe Flash Player for mobile browsers. Then just recently Adobe wrote in their blog that they will not be certifying any Android 4.1 devices. Adobe also says that starting August 15th they will configure the settings in the play store to only allow Flash Player updates to devices that already have Flash installed whereas devices that do not have Flash installed will not be authorized to download it from the Google Play Store. Devices which update from 4.0 to 4.1 will be keeping flash but Adobe recommends users to uninstall it because it may exhibit some unexpected behavior.
This week Google announced Google Now on Android Jellybean, this is basically a voice assistant to compete with siri. Both of the competitors are still in beta and running the latest version. There is a video below from Technobuffalo showing the competition which shows a clear winner.
This week GSMAreana reported that the Galaxy Note 2 will have a 5.5" screen and a narrower body is confirmed. They created a mock up of the Galaxy Note which the design is inspired by the Galaxy S III. The release date for this phone has been moved forward from October to November this is so that samsung is ahead of Apple's iPhone launch.
Flickr is now utilising Nokia Maps to power photo geotagging and location search. Flickr is the latest company using Nokia Maps, they just announced a major redesign mapping interface which will rely on Nokia Maps for data. So now, when users geotag their photos or search through maps to find images from other users, Nokia will be providing the satellite images and overall mapping style.
Microsoft will be bringing the new Windows 8 Marketplace to over 180 countries at launch. Asus Preping for HD 7850 DirectCUII Dragon Edition Graphics Card

Asus is reportedly working on a new HD 7850 card. This card is not aimed for extreme overclockers but aimed at users which wants price to performance ratio. This card utilises Asus's DirectCUII cooling solution but this card is labled Dragon Edition, with a model number of DRAGON HD7850-DC2O-2GD5. This card clocks at 910 MHz and 5GHz on memory, which falls in the middle of the reference clock speeds and the speeds of the DirectCUII TOP edition card (reference clock speeds of 870/4.84 GHz; and DirectCUII TOP clock speeds of 975/5.00 GHz). One interesting feature the Dragon Edition has over the TOP edition is that the Dragon Edition features a metal back plate. The Dragon Edition features a 6+3 Phase Digi+ VRM and draws power from 2 6-Pin power connectors. The main heatsink of this card is having a slightly different design than the normal DirectCU II cooler. This card is likely to be priced in between a stock HD 7850 and a HD 7850 Top card.

iPhone Turns 5 Today

Today is a historical day in the smartphone world, 5 years ago on this very day the iPhone was launched and it started the smartphone era and shaped how a modern smartphone is today. Let us flip back to January 9 2007, the day where Steve Jobs announced the iPhone. Then 5 years from this date the iPhone was officially launched, and the consumers loved the device. In this 5 year period 250 million units of the iPhone was shipped. Giving Apple a 30 billion profit every year.
The iPhone has changed the lives of many people, and some can't live without an iPhone. The iPhone was one of the most revolutionary phones of all time and shaped how a phone is, for example in the year 3.5" was considered big but now with the Samsung Galaxy S III's 4.8" screen. If Apple does not increase the screen size in the next iPhone many consumers are going to be pretty angry. With all the competition, the iPhone still sells better than any other phone to date. The iPhone not only helped millions of people but they also helped Apple to be the world's most valuable company. So we from The Technology Of Today would like to wish the iPhone its 5th Birthday and if steve was here on this day he would be really happy. This Phone revolutionized the smartphone world from ever aspect.

Google I/O 2012 Wrap Up

Google I/O 2012 kicked off with the keynote which is a stage for new software and hardware. This year Google Unveiled the next iteration of Android 4.1 dubbed JellyBean. One of the key aspect of Jellybean is the smoothness, which throws away the so called android Lag; Google calls this Project butter, you know smooth smooth butter. With Jellybean google is bringing a siri competition called google now which it will know your schedules and meetings. It also knows your preferences so when you do a google search it will follow that preference. The notification pull down menu has been upgraded so now if you pull down on a certain notification more info will be shown and it works the other way round too. Google also revamped how you put your widgets on your homescreen now, So now the widgets will auto resize depending on the size of space you have. The gallery now has a filmstrip view so if you would like to delete a photo just swipe and it will be deleted, don't worry about accidentally deleting a photo there is a undo button. The keyboard on jellybean is now smarter with better autocorrect and a better dictionary. Like the new iPad, jellybean will have voice dictation but now you can use it offline. Android beam is one new feature in jellybean which enables NFC devices to transfer videos, pictures etc which is something like s beam on the Galaxy S III. Searching on the google search widget on your homescreen in jellybean is super easy and fun. Just click the voice search button and ask your question and it will answer your questions just like siri but the voice is more human like. Google Now cards will pop up on your homescreen when you are in a certain location and need some info, for example if you're in the airport your boarding pass will pop up. Android jellybean update will be available on-the-air for the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and the Motorola Xoom in mid July which is 2-3 weeks after Google I/O. SDK is now available at android developer. In Jellybean google still kept the animation which you get by pressing simultaneously on the android version. This time a red jellybean will pop up and if you press on it many jellybeans will pop out and you can play with it by swiping.

Next up Google announced the rumored Nexus tablet which is called the Nexus 7 and is made by Asus. The tablet is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 Quad core processor, 1 gig of RAM, 7" IPS display (1280x800), 8GB and 16GB variant, and comes with jellybean preinstalled. Google also say this is the first device to ship with chrome as the default browser opposed to the stock android browser. Most of the features of this tablet is about the same but more of what he kindle fire is giving. This will be shipping in mid July for $199 for the 8GB model and $249 for the 16GB model.
Finally google announced the Nexus Q which is the latest piece of technology from google. This is basically a mini PC capable of streaming video to your TV and is powered by android. The Nexus Q is made in the US. You would need an android phone to run this device and also $399 to spare. Google says this is the first social streaming media player. This basically allows you to watch videos and play music from your phone to the media player, and the best thing you can link a few of these to the cloud so you can play music or videos wherever you have it connected.

Google Nexus Tablet Leaked

Earlier this month there was leaked images of the Google Nexus tablet. Today Gizmodo Australia obtained a training document of the Nexus tablet. The picture on the document does not look like the one leaked earlier this month so this could just be a fake. The technical specifications on the document is:

  • 7" 1280x800 IPS display with 178 degree viewing angle
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 chip
  • nVidia GeForce 12-core GPU
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB or 16GB of internal storage
  • 1.2MP front-facing camera, no rear camera
  • 9-hour battery life
  • Wi-Fi a/b/g/n
  • NFC with Google Wallet
One of the key rumors of the nexus tablet is the $199 price point, based on the document the Nexus tablet is going to start at $199 for the 8GB model and $249 for the 16GB model. Another thing is that Google is allegedly taking over the software updates on this Nexus tablet so you will get newer versions of android with little or no delay whatsoever. This tablet should be the star of Google I/O this year. Stay tuned this wednesday as we keep you updated.

Phone Tech Update [Ep 5]

One of The biggest news stories of this week is the Microsoft Surface tablet, to check out our post click here. But that was not just what microsoft revealed this week, a few days later they officially announced windows Phone 8 and it will be available this fall, click here to check it out. The next big news which has been circulating the web is about the Samsung Galaxy S III. The news is that a guy was driving his car with his brand new Galaxy S III and his phone was in the car dock without the charger not plugged in, all of a sudden there was a flash of white smoke, sparks and a loud bang from the phone. Then he stopped his car to examine his phone, apparently the bottom of the phone burned and melted through the case. The man then sent the phone back to samsung and he did not receive a replacement phone. His problem might happen to any Galaxy S III user. Samsung knew about the problem and said they were investigating the problem, meanwhile the man is left with nothing.
Next is motorola is introducing a new look for their ICS Razr and Razr Maxx. Overall the interface has some similarities to the original ICS. For some users the new interface might be different but after some time it should look normal. A large amount of apps and the appearance of Motoblur has also changed. This is one of the firs thing google did after acquisition of Motorola Mobility last month. They released a Promo video showing off the new features coming with the ICS update. Overall this new look looks quite promising.
A few days ago Foxconn CEO Terry Gou revealed an intention to overtake Samsung in every electronics-manufacturing can be achieved within 5 years. Foxconn recently bought stake in a sharp LCD screen plant and this partnership is hoped to give and edge over Samsung's technology. He also said that Sharp is 3 years ahead of Samsung in its 10th generation screen plant. Sharp may be focusing on IGZO technology which the japanese has developed, that technology is making debut in the display on the new iPad. Then he added that people should wait for the iPhone 5 because it will put the Samsung Galaxy S III to shame.

Windows Phone 8

Today Microsoft held their windows phone Summit in San Francisco. They announced Windows Phone 8 and it will be launch in fall which is expected to be around the time of Windows 8 launch. The main feature of Windows phone 8 is support for multi-core processors, which is something quite big for the windows phone platform because Windows Phone 7.5 only supported single core processors. One of the biggest changes in Windows Phone 8 is the interface, it still keeps the live tiles but now you can resize it and put widgets.
Another major update is the support for 720P resolution as Windows Phone 7.5 only supports WVGA resolution. There are 3 screen resolutions in Windows Phone 8 WVGA(800X480), WXGA(1280X768), 720P(1280X720). Windows phone 8 supports 2 aspect ratios which are 15:9 or 16:9. The next biggest feature which Windows Phone 7.5 lacks is MicroSD support which means expandable memory like most android phones. The next iteration of Windows Phone will also support NFC for mobile payments. With NFC support Windows Phone will have a Wallet Hub. Skype on Windows Phone 8 ha been integrated deeply into the Operating System.
In Windows Phone 8 bing maps is going to be thrown overboard and replaced by Nokia Maps. Multitasking on Windows 8 has been revamped but still no match for android. Apps has been a core feature people look in smartphones, notably games, Microsoft is bringing in DirectX support to Windows Phone 8 to help porting of apps. IE10 in Windows Phone 8 has also been revamped and according to sunspider score IE10 smokes the native android browser and safari in iOS 6
Windows Phone 8 also brings improved camera with Panorama and Burst Shot; These features are found in most android phones but Windows phone has an advantage over android phones with a dedicated shutter button on every Windows phone. Microsoft is also promising that each Windows Phone 8 will at least have 18 months of support with all updates. But sadly existing Windows Phone will not be getting a Windows Phone Update, they will only get a Windows Phone 7.8 update which only gives the new start screen. Nokia, Samsung, HTC and Huawei will be the first manufacturers to ship Windows Phone 8 devices. But one thing we know is that Windows Phone 8 devices will be coming in fall or some time in Q4 for the holidays.

Nokia announcement on 18/6/12 falls on the same day as Microsoft's Mystery event

Last week Microsoft released invitations to an event in Los Angeles on the 18th of June 2012. There are rumors stating that microsoft will be announcing a Windows 8 tablet of their own and there is even a rumor stating that microsoft is going to announce their acquisition of Nokia's Mobile division. One thing which clearly not going to be announced on the event is Windows 8, this is because 2 days after the event the Windows Phone summit will start. Today Nokia US posted a picture which shows the date of a unknown announcement and surprisingly the announcement falls on the same day as the mystery Microsoft event. The background of the picture is showing a screenshot of nokia maps, this might just mean that nokia maps might be intergrated to windows phone 8. This all could just be a major coincidence or not, we have to wait till the day comes to find out more. Stay tuned we will be doing live updates on the event.

PRESS RELEASE

Give yourself a browser makeover

Opera 12 debuts with new customization options, smart features

Oslo, Norway — June 14, 2012

If you’re the type of person who spends most of your days in front of a web browser, get ready for a summer makeover that will last the entire year. Opera 12, the newest release from the browser junkies at Opera Software, debuts today with everything you need for a complete browser transformation.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to taking your web browsing from drab to fab:

1. Download Opera 12

It’s free, downloads fast and installs even faster. Point your old browser to http://www.opera.com/, and let us do the rest.

2. Play dress up

Most browsers’ color palettes don’t inspire any of your creative impulses. That’s why Opera 12 has introduced themes, the easiest, fastest way to customize the look of your browser. With hundreds of themes available, and more added each day, you can always express your personal style. Browse the full gallery here:https://addons.opera.com/themes/

3. Lights, camera, action!

What other browser encourages you to strike a pose? Opera 12 makes you the star of your own show by allowing applications to use your webcam (always and only with your express permission). Hilarity and awesomeness often ensue as these applications demonstrate:
  • Photo Booth
Enjoy our take on the funhouse photo booth.
  • Polaroid
Please do not shake your browser.
  • FaceKat
Use your head — literally — to avoid asteroids.

4. Sexier security

Nothing is sexier (to us, anyway) than knowing your personal information is safe and secure. Opera 12 makes it even easier to know how websites treat your data and personal information. We overhauled our famous security badge to make it easier to understand the security and privacy policies of the sites you visit. You can quickly see if a site is using your location information or wants to turn on your webcam.

5. Enjoy all the extras

Opera 12 comes with more than just these features. Numerous other tweaks, tricks and tucks make this Opera version the best yet:
  • Plug-ins run in their own process, so if they crash, Opera keeps singing.
  • Giddy-up: Opera 12 receives a significant speed boost — faster page loading, faster start up and faster HTML5 rendering — over its predecessor. 64-bit support on Windows and Mac gives better performance on more advanced machines. Why waste time loading a page? You have more important stuff to play with.
  • For the real speed freaks among us, try out our experimental hardware acceleration.
  • Right-to-left text support and five new languages: Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Urdu and Kazakh. Opera 12 now comes in 60 total languages.
“You spend hours each day in front of a web browser,” says Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera. “Shouldn’t those hours be as fun and, occasionally, as productive as possible? We think so, so we made Opera 12 the smartest, fastest and most unique browser available. In a sea of browsers that look the same and act the same, isn’t it nice to know that you can get something better? We think you deserve it.”
Even though the makeover is complete, there’s no need to stop exploring Opera. We recommend Speed Dial extensions to liven up our popular Speed Dial, which keeps your favorite sites one click away. Here are three Speed Dial extensions we recommend:
  • Gismeteo
Your local weather, right in your Speed Dial.
  • TED
Watch the featured TED Talk of the Day.
  • Live news feed
Headlines from the world’s news sources, constantly updated.

Just can’t get enough?

For a full guide to all our features, visit: http://www.opera.com/browser/features/.

Toys for web developers

Opera 12 gets a boost from improved handling of web standards, including improvements to CSS3 and HTML5 support. Full documentation for developers is right here: http://dev.opera.com/.

We are passionate about breaking down barriers, so everyone can share in the power of the internet. Our vision of one web for all remains at the heart of what we do, because we believe that participation changes everything.
