nano SIM Card, The Standard Set By Apple

Introduction

The mobile phone is by far one of the most revolutionary tech product and it changed the way we communicate. And one of the most important item in a mobile phone is a SIM card. A SIM card is defined as a subscriber identity module and it stores all your carrier settings and some information. The first SIM card was actually the size of your average credit card and soon after that was created a smaller version of that was made and it was called the mini SIM card. Then after a little over a decade the micro SIM card was introduced and it is pretty small compared to your average SIM card. Only recently mobile phone manufacturers are starting to adopt this standard. Apple has been using the micro SIM card standard since the iPhone 4 and ever since then it has been implemented on all iOS device using SIM cards. This year the nano SIM card was introduced and the first phone to feature this new SIM card size is the iPhone 5.

nano SIM Card 

Earlier this year Apple sent in some designs for the nano SIM card standard, some OEM's and telecom companies also sent in their designs. But at last Apple's design was chosen and thus it is now featured on the iPhone 5. The main reason why Apple wants the nano SIM card on their iPhone is because they want some extra space inside to put more circuitry. The nano SIM card is smaller than ever and is also 15% thinner than  current SIM cards.

The Big Question

So the big question now is wheter the current SIM cards can be converted into nano SIM cards. To answer this question we have Giesecke & Devrient which is the inventor of the SIM card and is also manufacturing the nano SIM cards. Here is what they said:

"As you surely know some people have cut down a "conventional" SIM (2FF) in a Micro SIM (3FF) with a knife or a pair of scissors . Sometimes it has worked, sometimes not. Reason that this method functioned was that the 2FF and the 3FF SIM card has the same thickness. The thickness of the Nano-SIM is reduced by about 15 percent - so we think that a reducing only in size is not working. 

Backward compatibility with older device models is ensured with an adapter solution that allows the Nano-SIM to be integrated into all established mobile devices for universal use"

So the conclusion is that it is possible to cut down a normal SIM into a micro SIM but it will not be easy and it might affect the chip on the nano SIM card. As we said earlier if your are getting a iPhone 5 it is better to get a nano SIM card from your carrier to avoid issues.

[CONFIRMED] iPhone 5 Utilising nano SIM Card

Apple is expected to unveil the next gen iPhone next week at a special event. Earlier this year Apple made a nano SIM card standard and their design was happily accepted. Since then many rumors say that the next gen iPhone will be using the nano SIM card standard so that Apple can save some internal space. There has also been leaks of the nano SIM card tray. The nano SIM card was obtained by T-Mobile and iFun went to have a first look, T-Mobile said that these SIM cards has been sent to them for about a week now. 
Dear partners,
You will receive today a new generation of SIM cards for the latest generation of smartphones that come in the near future on the market. Sort your SIM card please first not in their cards in hand and give it not out to customers.We will inform you shortly about how to proceed.

iPhone 5 Utilising Nano SIM Card ?

 There has been many iPhone 5 rumors in this past month. There was one rumor which was Apple is allegedly using the nano SIM in their next gen iPhone. Earlier this year their nano SIM design was chosen by ETSI amongst the other manufacturers which sent in designs. The nano SIM is approx 30% smaller than the micro SIM. This translates into less space occupied by the SIM card and more space for other components. Thanks to a french blog called Nowhere Else, we now have a better idea of how the nano SIM tray would look like. If this part is legit then it shows that the iPhone 5's design is mostly unchanged, but we can't confirm it. The iPhone 5 is slated to be launched on the 12th of September, it is rumored to be having a 4" display and a smaller dock connector.
