Windows Live Messenger To Be Discontinued On March 15, The Death Of A Once Popular IM Service

Late last year Microsoft revealed that they are planning to retire their IM service but did not mention any time frame. Since the company took over Skype in 2011 they have been putting it in the center stage and neglecting their own IM service. Today they have released a statement that WLM will be shut down on March 15. This is a pretty logical thing to do because WLM users have been going down pretty badly over the years and its popularity also sank.
Hello,On 15th March 2013 we are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together. Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips. You'll be able to instant message and video chat with them just like before, and also discover new ways of staying in touch with Skype on your mobile and tablet. Yours sincerely,The Messenger Team

Skype Preview For Windows Phone 8 Now Available

One of the key features of Windows Phone 8 is integration with Skype, but the problem now is that Skype is still not available to download on the Windows Phone store. Currently Skype is available on both Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT. The app is in the works and will be available pretty soon and Microsoft has just released a preview version of Skype for WP8. The app however will not be easily found on the WP8 store so WP Central has provided a QR code link. This preview version however will not be as polished and bug free as how the final version will be.

Microsoft Retiring Windows Live Messenger In Favor Of Skype

Earlier last year Microsoft acquired Skype and the $8.5 billion and the transaction was completed in October. The reason why Microsoft was interested in acquiring Skype is because Windows Live Messenger was getting neglected for skype. With that said Skype has been Microsoft's #1 choice for video and voice calls and it is even integrated into Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Today Microsoft has announced that they will be retiring Windows Live Messenger earlier next year. So to all those WLM users Microsoft will now merge them with skype and that includes over 100 million WLM users. "We will retire Messenger in all countries worldwide in the first quarter of 2013 (with the exception of mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available)," says Skype's Tony Bates. Microsoft is also encouraging users to download the latest version of Skype which includes support for merging Skype accounts and Microsoft accounts. So if you are a Windows Live Messenger you can now merge it with your Skype account more smoothly and you will also enjoy all the good things Skype brings.
