Nokia Lumia 925 Initial Impressions, The First Aluminum Lumia

Earlier today Nokia held an event in London in which they unveiled the long awaited Lumia 925 codnamed catwalk. The device bears similar specs to the Lumia 920 and 928 but one thing which is different on the Lumia 925 is that the storage is only at 16GB and a microSD card slot is still MIA. Well let me recap the specs: a 1.5GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 4.5" 1280 X 768 OLED display, an 8.7MP Pureview camera, Windows Phone 8, and LTE support. Well in terms of the design of the Lumia 925, the device tops the chart of being the slimmest Lumia device to date measuring in at a staggering 8.5mm. The weight is significantly lower compared to the 920 and 928. Nokia achieved this with the inclusion of a aluminum band around the device which acts as an antenna for the device and gives the device a bit more rigidity. In the following days i will have a response article about Nokia's flagship WP8 device(s). From the surface it looks like Nokia just redesigned the 920 and that is what they did, but they also made the camera more powerful then ever. The MPx count is still the same but this time around Nokia added a sixth lens which is 1 lens more than the 920 and 928. The additional lens is a glass physical lens which accompanies the 5 plastic ones which are present on the 920. With the inclusion of this sixth glass lens, Nokia says that the ISO can now go up to 3200 and daylight as well as low light images will be more sharper than ever before. The 925 with its 6 element lens is the first in the industry and beat devices like the iPhone5 which has only 5 element lens. Well with the overall thinness of the device Nokia wasn't able to throw in wireless charging but they did provide an optional wireless charging accessory which connects through the 3 pin outs on the back of the device similar to the L720. The Lumia 925 has received quite a lot of reactions and one of them is the color which Nokia failed as they were only offering metalic colors for the Lumia 925 but that can be easily solved with the wireless charging back cover which comes in many different colors. Moving to the software sides, the Lumia 925 still runs Microsoft's WP8 but nokia has added a new app called Nokia Smart Camera Mode which is by default the main camera app and the main feature is its motion photo capabilities which are similar to action mode android devices (sample image below). The app is actually pretty cool and this will be soon be available to other Lumia WP8 devices via the Amber update coming in July. Alongside that Nokia has announced a new app coming to WP8 called Hipstamatic which is currently only on iOS. The main highlights of the app is the filters and the capability to post images to instagram. Overall the Lumia 925 seems to be an underwhelming device. The device will be hitting store next month for about 469euros. In the US this will be a T-Mobile exclusive device and in the UK it will be a Vodafone exclusive. Stay tuned for more content on the Lumia 925 coming your way in the coming days ahead.

Nokia Sold Over 4.4 Million Windows Phone Devices In Q4 2012

Nokia today made a surprise PR in which they revealed the preliminary Q4 sales. Their financial status and official sales will be announced later this month on the 24th. But going to today's news, Nokia has sold 4.4 Lumia devices in the three month period and for the first time ever the WP sales beat Symbian sales. Other sales finding include 9.3 million full touch asha devices sold and a total of 14 million smart devices sold. However, Nokia also mentioned that Q1 will not be as good as last quarter because of the holiday season sales and growing popularity on new devices. Overall, this might just be the quarter where Nokia is gaining profit. Stephen Elop had this to say:
"We are pleased that Q4 2012 was a solid quarter where we exceeded expectations and delivered underlying profitability in Devices & Services and record underlying profitability in Nokia Siemens Networks. We focused on our priorities and as a result we sold a total of 14 million Asha smartphones and Lumia smartphones while managing our costs efficiently, and Nokia Siemens Networks delivered yet another very good quarter."

Nokia Posts Q3 Results, 2.9 Million Lumia Phones Sold

Today is the day where Nokia announces their Q3 results and as expected they have taken a very big hit. Lumia devices sold in Q3 has dropped to 2.9 million from the 4 million in Q2. Their total smartphone sales dropped to 6.3 million which means they sold 3.4 million symbian phones in this quarter that number is expected to drop even more next month with the Lumia 920 and the 820 launching next month and the fact that Nokia is slowly drifting away from Symbian. Their average sales price has gone up to 155 euros and that is caused by the sales of lumia devices. But the average price of a Lumia phone has dropped drastically and is now at 160 euros. North America sales of nokia phones has also dropped 50% and the Lumia sales in Q3 stand at 300,000 units. Stephen Elop had this to say "Q3 was a difficult quarter in our Devices & Services business," However there is some good news as Nokia's feature phone lineup continue selling well with sales up to 76.6 million which is 4% more than Q2 but 15% lesser than this time last year. The full touch asha phones sold pretty well by selling over 6.5 million. Overall their net sales are at $9.48 billion or 7.24 billion euros. The verdict is that they took a loss of $754 million or 576 million euros. Their net cash stands at 4.7 Billion or 3.56 billion in Q3. All of these results are within the margin of analysts predictions. But these numbers are set to change next month as they are introducing the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 which has caused some buzz.

Lumia Phone Sales in Q2 Still Not That Good

Every company is now calculating their Q2 2012 financial and Nokia is going to release their's on July 19th. These numbers will determine the state which Nokia is in and whether it is a good choice by boarding the Windows Phone ship. Nielsen released its latest estimates for the second quarter of 2012. The results don't look good for Nokia and despite Nokia’s exclusive focus on Windows Phone with its Lumia series of phones, the company still hasn't caught up in WP devices market share with Samsung and HTC. The two other companies have been selling WP devices since the debut of the platform and have some sales accumulated from back then. Still, all those numbers aren't that big at all - while Samsung and HTC Windows Phones held 0.5% of the smartphone market, Nokia accounted for 0.3% by the end of Q2 2012 in the US. Let's flip back to the start of Q2 2012, Nokia launched the Lumia 900 and is exclusively available on at&t. Many analysts predict that the Lumia 900 will surpass half a million devices since Nokia executives boldly refers the Lumia phones a the first real windows phone. Also at some point at&t commented at the sales of the Lumia 900 saying that i has exceeded their expectations. However in latest Nielsen and comScore numbers show that nokia sold a mere 330,000 Windows Phones which is not only Lumia 900 sales but also other Nokia Windows Phone devices. So its either that nokia's expectation were low or consumers just won't change. So how did Asymco get those numbers? Nielsen and comScore gave them to us: in the breakdown of hardware vendors Nielsen shows Nokia as behind Samsung and HTC’s Windows Phone offerings (despite not being “real” WP7 devices…) as having made 0.3% of all current U.S. smartphones. Multiple that against the total number of US smartphone owners (which comScore’s recently recorded as 110 million) and you get this:

110,000,000 X 0.003 = 330,000 units.

With existing Windows Phone 7 devices not upgradeable to Windows Phone 8, sales have obviously dropped. In at&t the Lumia 900 is no longer in second place for sales and is replaced by the HTC One X and the Lumia 900 is also expected to go even further down since it is not upgradeable to Windows Phone 8 and the recent launch of the Samsung Galaxy S III. The first place is still the iPhone 4s though. Q3 2012 doesn't look very bright for Windows Phone devices as Windows Phone 8 will only come in October and sales might slow down as many consumers are patiently waiting for Windows Phone 8 handsets. Nokia in the other hand acts smartly by virtually stopping all manufacturing of WP7 handsets, but Windows Phone 8 is not yet out so there’s a certain time gap during which the company is just sitting idly in one of its toughest transformation periods.
“Since current Nokia phones will only work on Windows 7, the OEMs have stopped supporting the phones. They are very close to stop manufacturing parts for the phones, with the anticipation that these phones will become entirely obsolete in three months. In the meantime, the new phones developed for Windows 8 are yet to start manufacturing. Without much funding budgeted for new product development, the whole company has been sitting somewhat idly waiting for business to start on with the release of Windows 8,” a Nokia Asia employee said.
Nokia is also two of its four offices in China which is now the World's biggest phone market and dominated by Samsung and android phones. Additionally they have severely crippled their relationship with Asian carriers after stopping MeeGo and switching to Windows Phone. Nokia sales slumped 70% in Asia in the first quarter of 2012.
