Olympic Comeback

The Summer Olympics come once every 4 years and in the tech world, 4 years is a long...long time. That's because technological innovation is always moving at a fast pace and slowing down is not an option. In the case of this year's Rio Olympics which have officially started last Friday, a lot of things have changed since the last Summer Olympics was held in London.

Back when that happened in 2012, our site just started off as a new tech blog and my experience with mobile technology has just begun. Today's article will serve as a review of what are the big things that have been happening in the last 4 years and how the technology industry has changed.

Microsoft Lumia turns blue, what happened to purple?

microsoft-lumia-official-twitter-blue-purple

About a year ago this time, Microsoft completed the acquisition of Nokia's Mobile division and fresh out of the waters, the branch of Microsoft was called Microsoft Mobile or Microsoft Devices. Accordingly, the upcoming months featured new device launches which still bear the Nokia name like the Nokia Lumia 830 and Nokia Lumia 730. That didn't last long as Microsoft officially announced in October that they will be rebranding Nokia to Microsoft Lumia and the change is set to spread out onto social media accounts in the coming months ahead.

Seemingly enough, today we're quite familiar with the Microsoft Lumia branding and it does sound a little catchy but saying Microsoft Lumia 640 XL Dual SIM is a mouthful.

This is the Lumia 630 | Review

Lumia-630-dual-sim-review-malaysia

Three years ago Stephen Elop, former Microsoft Executive and current Nokia CEO (in 2011) inked a deal between Microsoft and Nokia to focus on creating Windows Phone devices. Since then a lot of things changed and Nokia effectively became the savior for windows phone with a near total grasp in the windows phone market share, its like they are the operating system. Late last year Microsoft finally announced that they will be purchasing Nokia’s mobile division for $7 billion, the deal wasn’t much a surprise given the relationship between the two in the past years.

Just before closing the deal, Stephen Elop took the stage at BUILD 2014 to unveil the first Windows Phone 8.1 device(s), the Lumia 930 and Lumia 630. These two devices are probably the very first look at how Microsoft plans to overhaul Nokia’s smartphones. In this review i’ll be specifically talking about the Lumia 630 and more specific, the dual SIM variant. As i said during my article about the Lumia 630 a few weeks back, the Lumia 630 really is full of firsts for a Windows Phone device. For this review’ i’ll first divulge more about that as we progress into this review.

Nokia's Lumia 930 is the Flagship Windows 8.1 smartphone

LUMIA BUILD 2014
Earlier today, Nokia announced two new Lumia devices at Microsoft's Build 2014 keynote. Both of the new devices (Lumia 930 and Lumia 630/635) will be the first handsets to run Windows Phone 8.1 out of the box and the Lumia 630/635 is the first windows phone device to utilize on screen buttons and it also come without a camera shutter button. The Lumia 630 comes in single and dual SIM flavours which can support 2G/3G networks.

What is The Nokia X?

Nokia-X
The dream of Android on Nokia’s hardware is finally a living and breathing reality. After numerous concepts and rumors about Nokia creating an android powered device throughout the years, Nokia finally dropped the bomb at Mobile World congress earlier this week. They announced a new category which is supposedly the convergence of Asha and Lumia in terms of design and software. Nokia X or ‘android on nokia’ is probably the last series of handsets bearing the Nokia name because after the Microsoft-Nokia acquisition is complete, the ‘Nokia’ name will most likely be changed to only ‘Asha’ and ‘Lumia’. What Microsoft plans to do with this line of devices is yet to be known but one thing’s for sure is that the first three devices will be in the hands of users this week and the rest of the story is yet to be known.

My Thoughts On The Lumia 1020

Yesterday, Nokia held their July 11 event in New York City and they have taken wraps off the latest addition to the Lumia family called the Lumia 1020. Well prior to launch there was quite a lot of leaks, in fact nearly everything was leaked out 1 hour before the event. Those leaks did take away some thunder for Stephen Elop on stage. I can say that this is the second most leaked device this year and the first place being the Samsung Galaxy S4 which was leaked pretty extensively prior to its launch. Well enough about that today i'll be talking all about the Lumia 1020. Ever since the 808 Pureview launched in MWC 2012, netizens were asking when will Nokia ever combine that sensor with a the Windows Phone OS.

We were betting high on Nokia's 2012 flagship phone dubbed the Lumia 920 but it merely came with only an 8MP camera but Nokia did introduce some pretty cool innovations alongside it. Since then Nokia has introduced 2 other devices based on the Lumia 920 which is the Lumia 928 and Lumia 925. Deep down the DNA of the three devices are there but they are just presented in different forms to suit different needs. After about a year or so since the inception of the 808 pureview, the Lumia 1020 was born and the netizens were overjoyed for the 41MP sensor which is powered by the third ecosystem and not on a dying platform (symbian). Apparently the stockholders were also quite happy with the device as their stocks surged after the event. Oh yeah if you missed the even yesterday you can watch the even here

Moving on to actually talking about the Lumia 1020; I was literally super excited when i first saw the leaked image of the Lumia 1020 earlier this week. The yellow body and black camera lens seemed to match very well. Before i go in too much about my thoughts for the device, i'll first touch on the specifications of the device. The Lumia 1020 comes with a 4.5" Puremotion HD+ display, a 1.5GHz dual core snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage which is not physically expandable, a 1.2MP wide angle front facing camera, a 2000mAh non removable battery, LTE support and the usual knick knacks like bluetooth etc. The main star of the phone of course is the 41MP sensor which is referenced from the 808 pureveiw. One of the downside of the Lumia 1020 is that is does not have wireless charging built in but Nokia did add to contact points to attach a wireless charging sleeve on to the device.

The overall dimension of the device is similar to the Lumia 920 but this time around Nokia has managed to make it lighter even with a more advanced camera on it; it weighs in at 158g which is a bit lighter than the 808 pureview but is not as light as 2013 flagships by any stretch at all. In this article i won't talk too much about the camera itself as it would be a lot to talk so i have decided to do so in the upcoming article which i will explain every single bit about how the camera works and what does 41MP mean in a smartphone. To sum things up here the Lumia 1020 basically has the same specs as the other 3 flagship Nokia Lumia devices with the exception the Lumia 1020 having 2GB of RAM which is most probably needed so that the camera can process the images with much more ease. You can look up all of the specs in detail below here:
"The Lumia 1020 is basically the Lumia 920 we all dreamed of"
In the event, Stephen Elop was mostly talking about the zooming capabilities thus the hashtag for the event was #zoomreinvented. The thing which i found most impressive on the Lumia 1020 is not the hardware but the software, the engineering team at Nokia has really done a good job. One of the features are that you can take a shot whether zoomed in or out and after that you can zoom back in or zoom back out. Another feature is the low exposure which will open a window to a ton of camera effects like the one they demonstrated on stage which is writing in mid air with light. The Nokia Pro Camera app was just the thing the Lumia 1020 needed to add a little more professional feel to the device.

The new camera app will allow users to change manual settings like ISO, shutter speed, etc; the UI is similar to the one found with the Galaxy Camera by Samsung but Nokia's version is far more simplier to use. In the coming months Pureview branded Lumia phones like the Lumia 925 will be getting this new camera update with the Amber update. Additionally the 41MP sensor on the Lumia 1020 is back side illuminated and also comes with OIS, i'll cover that in more in depth in the article dedicated to the camera on the Lumia 1020. In the event, Stephen Elop did touch on the audio of the Lumia 1020 which looks to be as powerful as the one found in the Lumia 920. That's pretty much it for the camera section of the Lumia 1020, stay tuned for the dedicated article coming in a few days time.
"Zoom has a new definition"
Earlier today while i was researching about the device i found out that there are some pretty positive feedback from both tech sites and the commenters. It seemed that the people which had their hands on with the device found that it is very nice to hold in the hand and is not too thick by any stretch. The weight was also said to be very balanced. Personally looking at the spec sheet i do think the same, the weight and the dimensions were perfected. The camera grip accessory is something quite interesting as it makes the Lumia 1020 look like a standard point and shoot camera with the inclusion of a 2 stage camera shutter button and a tripod mound, this accessory should be quite a popular one. But one thing i still can't find out is the exact thickness of the 1020 including the camera hump. The Lumia 1020 comes in yellow, black and white and in the US it will be coming exclusively to AT&T on July 26 for $299 and will also be heading to China and select European markets by this quarter. Below here are some sample images taken with the Lumia 1020, Download the original image and try zooming in you will be amazed by the detail which the image poses.

Jolla Announced Their First Smartphone, Yours For €399

Late last year a group of ex-nokia employees under the N9 and the meego platform formed a new company called Jolla Mobile and soon after that they showed off the OS which will be powering the device from the company which was called Sailfish OS. Fast forward to this day, the company has finally announced their first device which somehow doesn't have an exact name yet but for now i'll just call it Jolla's first smartphone.  This device will be pioneering the new operating system and in the hardware sides' the device packs a 4.5" display of unknown resolution, an unnamed dual core processor, an 8MP camera with LED flash, 16GB of onboard storage which is expandable via microSD slot, the ever so controversial user removable battery is present, and LTE in supported regions. The company said that this device will be yielding support for android apps. Moving to the outer of the device, which includes a two part construction which is the back cover and the phone, the design looks very simplistic and has a certain style to it and to top it off, multiple colors will be available.
"Carrying the DNA of Nokia with Colors"
"Jolla's phone might not have the apps but it's design is surely something to drool over"
I can see this phone really being a popular hit among people which are particularly keen for design because the amount of detail the team at Jolla put is just phenomenal. Personally i really like the design of it with the buttons and the two piece design, this really is the true successor to the N9 or in other words "the N9 reborn". Moving on to the nitty gritty info, Jolla is planning to launch this phone at first to selected European countries and in the near future more regions will get it. The price of the device is set at €399 or about $510, personally i think that the price is pretty reasonable but that is when i overlook the unannounced capabilities of the fresh OS. Additionally, device will be heading to users by the end of the year. It really looks like a tough battle for this new OS as they are not only competing with the heavyweight contenders but they also need to take on the new kids on the block which include Ubuntu, Tizen and Firefox. It seems to be a tough battle but i think Jolla is able to make it if they get the operating system correct because currently hand swiping gestures is pretty popular, so they are on the right track. In the same context they are having 3 pre order options for the device; the first one is a zero cost option which will include you a reservation of the device when it finally comes to your land; the second one is will cost you €40 and will get you a limited edition version of the device, a t-shirt and a priority status for you pre order; finally is the €100 deal which includes an exclusive back cover for the device, a t-shirt, and a €100 rebate off the total price of the device. You can check out more details here. As to more of my thoughts, i can't convey it because the company still has not officially revealed details on the sailfish OS in whole, so this will continue in a follow up article. Nokia Lumia 925 Initial Impressions, The First Aluminum Lumia

Earlier today Nokia held an event in London in which they unveiled the long awaited Lumia 925 codnamed catwalk. The device bears similar specs to the Lumia 920 and 928 but one thing which is different on the Lumia 925 is that the storage is only at 16GB and a microSD card slot is still MIA. Well let me recap the specs: a 1.5GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 4.5" 1280 X 768 OLED display, an 8.7MP Pureview camera, Windows Phone 8, and LTE support. Well in terms of the design of the Lumia 925, the device tops the chart of being the slimmest Lumia device to date measuring in at a staggering 8.5mm. The weight is significantly lower compared to the 920 and 928. Nokia achieved this with the inclusion of a aluminum band around the device which acts as an antenna for the device and gives the device a bit more rigidity. In the following days i will have a response article about Nokia's flagship WP8 device(s). From the surface it looks like Nokia just redesigned the 920 and that is what they did, but they also made the camera more powerful then ever. The MPx count is still the same but this time around Nokia added a sixth lens which is 1 lens more than the 920 and 928. The additional lens is a glass physical lens which accompanies the 5 plastic ones which are present on the 920. With the inclusion of this sixth glass lens, Nokia says that the ISO can now go up to 3200 and daylight as well as low light images will be more sharper than ever before. The 925 with its 6 element lens is the first in the industry and beat devices like the iPhone5 which has only 5 element lens. Well with the overall thinness of the device Nokia wasn't able to throw in wireless charging but they did provide an optional wireless charging accessory which connects through the 3 pin outs on the back of the device similar to the L720. The Lumia 925 has received quite a lot of reactions and one of them is the color which Nokia failed as they were only offering metalic colors for the Lumia 925 but that can be easily solved with the wireless charging back cover which comes in many different colors. Moving to the software sides, the Lumia 925 still runs Microsoft's WP8 but nokia has added a new app called Nokia Smart Camera Mode which is by default the main camera app and the main feature is its motion photo capabilities which are similar to action mode android devices (sample image below). The app is actually pretty cool and this will be soon be available to other Lumia WP8 devices via the Amber update coming in July. Alongside that Nokia has announced a new app coming to WP8 called Hipstamatic which is currently only on iOS. The main highlights of the app is the filters and the capability to post images to instagram. Overall the Lumia 925 seems to be an underwhelming device. The device will be hitting store next month for about 469euros. In the US this will be a T-Mobile exclusive device and in the UK it will be a Vodafone exclusive. Stay tuned for more content on the Lumia 925 coming your way in the coming days ahead.

Nokia Asha 501 Introduced, Breaking The Barriers

Well since announcing v2, i've not posted much about news here but today i am doing so because this is really just a breakthrough by Nokia. Going back to the topic, earlier today Stephen Elop went on stage in India and announced the newest member to the Asha family which is the Nokia 501. This device is truly special as it is the first device to usher in the new UI of Asha devices. The specs of this device is pretty blanch and includes a 3" 240 X 320 LCD capacitive screen, a 3.2MP camera, a 1200mAh battery, and a microSD card slot. Well these specs look really underwhelming in the world of quad cores and 8 cores, but what i think stands out the most in this device is the standby time of upto 48 days which is just 'mindblowing'. You have to remember that this device is not a dumbphone and can do nearly as much as a smartphone. On the downside of things this device does not come with 3G and only works with 2G but that can be overlooked by the $99 price tag and the targeted developing markets. In the line of hardware the Asha 501 doesn't come short as the body it comes in really resembles the Lumia lineup with bright and vibrant colors as well as a very close attention to detailing on the device itself. In the software side of things, Nokia is introducing a whole new user interface which include swiping gestures and swiping gestures. The whole navigation of the new software looks to be pretty similar to the swipe friendly meego OS. Apart from that Nokia also brought in their Xpress browser which is capable of compressing up to 90% of your data thus reducing your data usage. Alongside that Facebook and Twitter are also there out of the box and to add up to that 40 EA games are free and downloadable from the Nokia Store. Not coming up short Nokia also announces that popular applications like foursquare, wechat, CNN, etc are in the works for the Asha platform and will come soon. Additionally they also mentioned that HERE maps will be making its way to the Asha 501 by Q3. Well the main star of the software is what Nokia calls the fastlane which is one of the two homescreens present on the Asha 501. Fastlane is basically like a multitasking page for you where your most recent tasks are tabled there. To cut things short here the Nokia Asha 501 is not short of features for that $99 price tag. What it offers really is unbeatable at this price point. This phone might have pa standing chance at swaying users to get this device opposed to cheaper android devices. As i said earlier the year Low end handsets like the asha lineup by Nokia does make impact on this smartphone world. As to Nokia they are doing a very good job and they are following what Samsung is doing by giving their entire lineup the same look. But Nokia does it way better because Samsung merly just resize one device and call it another. Stay tuned for episode 1 of Perspective 101 which i will discuss about this matter in even more contrast.

What I Know About The Lumia 928

Last year when Nokia announced the Lumia 920 they said that the device will be exclusively available on AT&T for 6 months and by the end of this month the exclusivity will be gone. Talking about the topic today which is the Lumia 928, i'm betting that it will be announced by the end of this month at the earliest. In the past few weeks we've been served up with some rumors about this device and last week we saw the first leaked render of the device by @evleaks. The leaked render shows that the device will have a similar design to the recently announced Lumia 720 and it will feature both an LED flash and a Xenon flash too. Reaching out to the things we know about this device includes having similar specifications to the Lumia 920. I am still not quite sure about the camera of this device but one thing's for sure is that it will have a xenon flash which will help in low light picture taking. Another thing to keep note is that the Lumia 928 is not the successor to the Lumia 920 so don't expect something groundbreaking about it. Also it is still unwary whether this device will be a Verizon exclusive of an international phone. Running in the same page this device is most probably going to feature wireless charging but a microSD card slot could also be included but don't put your hopes so high. This is all which i can say about the Lumia 928 for now. Check out these renders of the Lumia 928 below. (i'm trying to embed the slideshow for the first time in this blog, if you have any issues with the slideshow not working raise them up in the comments below)

Low End Handsets, What Are The Implications

We are all now in the 21st century and in this point in time mobile devices especially smartphones are very hot and popular. As each year passes by the number of smartphone users grow every so slightly and the price for a smartphone is on the run down. But the problem is that it is still not cheap enough to compete in the non smartphone category which has prices of phones at very low prices. Well when you talk about the low end handset market, Nokia is sure to be in the talk because when it comes to a low end non smartphone handset a Nokia phone is sure to be the recommendation. This is because the compelling features Nokia wrap with their pre smartphone device lineup called the asha are very compelling and plus the prices for the device will not exceed the price of a low end smartphone. With the Asha lineup of device Nokia is really wrapping a smartphone like experience to the user to get themselves ready for a smartphone. Some of these asha handsets are even having full touch screens and 3G data connectivity. So lets move down even lower to the phone section which are devices which are basically used as a spare phone in case your's fail at anytime. These device still have a recognition in the market because they still hold the crown of having the longest battery life which can last a few weeks on a single charge and even some device can last one month on standby. So the question is what implications does a phone still being to the table in the smartphone world. Well apparently the phone still hold a bigger market share than the smartphones (for now that is), so it is actually still a very compelling market. The market is basically dominated by nokia with their feature phones, to give an example to the importance of the market, Samsung the leader in the smartphone pack is preparing a new line up of device called the Samsung REX which are feature phones under Samsung's brand. Even Samsung is tackling this market which means that this market does have some implication. All in all the phone will always have a place in the market unless one day the smartphone will go so cheap until its price is comparable to the normal phone, but that is something which will not come forward in the forseen future, so no worries there.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop Not Only Said How Embaressing Owning And iPhone Is He Also Threw One On The Ground In National TV

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop in the past have said some pretty bold things but the thing he said and did in his latest appearance in a local show called 'Hjalliksen Kanssa'. In the show he was being interviewed and in one point the host started asking about the unannounced Lumia 928. He continuously asked about when the 928 will launch and at a point the host decided to take out an iPhone and and Stephen Elop said 'how embaressing', then he threw it on the ground.

Nokia's MWC 2013 Press Conference Recap, No Lumia Pureview

Well, Nokia's event just ended a while ago and i watched a few ads and hands on with the devices. I also got the chance to read some press releases of the devices announced today at MWC. The event lasted about an hour and i was watching the livestream from Nokia, before watching it i was expecting to see the unexpected and Nokia somehow gave me that unexpected feeling. The event as usual starts with Stepehen Elop taking the stage and doing some talking and then he says that Nokia will be unveiling 4 new devices today. Besides that he also took some time to talk about the Nokia innovation and said that they are bringing high end features to low end devices and breaking every price point. Then without any other explanation he passed the stage to Nokia's Head of design Marko Ahtisaari which started introducing the 4 devices one by one taking it out of his pocket. The first device introduced is the Nokia 301 which is a mid range phone with a keypad. The coolest feature i think is the voice command on taking self shots. The device also comes in at many colors. The device will cost 65Euors and will ship in Q2. Then he shows off the Nokia 105 which is by far the cheapest nokia phone to date at 15Euros. The device is your average phone with the keypad, a color screen and what's not to forget about the torchlight. This phone will replace the ever so popular Nokia 1280 which sold over 120 million. Soon after that he takes the Lumia 520 out of his pocket and it is by far the cheapest Windows Phone 8 offering from Nokia. It has a 4" WVGA screen, a 1GHz dual core CPU, 512MB of RAM and a 5MP camera. Following the theme of bringing high end features to low end devices the Lumia 520 also features the Lumia 920's super sensitive screen. The Lumia 720 is the last new phone by Nokia today and it incorporates a camera which is not classified as Pureview but said to take very stunning images. The pin point of the Lumia 820 is the camera which has a f/1.9 aperture which allows more light to enter, the sensor is at 6.7MP. Like the 520 the 720 also sports the Lumia 920's super sensitive screen. Additionally the Lumia 720 is Nokia's first unibody phone which features a microSD card slot. In between Marko also announced the Here suite which comprises of Maps, Drive, and Transit. The suite is also making its way to non Lumia Windows Phone devices very soon. Thats pretty much a wrap up on the event, tell us what you think or join the conversation with us in our facebook page.

Nokia Is India's Most Trusted Brand For 2013

Last week when Nokia announced their quarterly earnings they finally posted a profit. Now according to the study by The Brand To Trust in india for 2013, Nokia became the most trusted brand in india for 2013. This position has been kept by them for the third consecutive year. This is important to have because in developing regions like India nokia phones could sell quite good.
The Brand Trust Report, India Study, 2013 (BTR 2013) is the third in its series and this year the report lists India’s 1100 Most Trusted Brands from 211 categories. Nokia Along With The Graphene Flagship Consortium Developing Practical Uses For Graphene, Unbreakable Phones ?

Well, lets just talk a bit of science here to break the ice in this story. The strongest material known to man is Graphene and it is a class 2D structure which measures in at one atom thick. Additionally graphene is 300 times tougher than steel and is also one the the lightest and best essential conductors. Well continuing our story, Nokia is leading the group or companies in the Graphene Flagship Consortium. This consortium consists of 73 companies and academic institutions in various fields and they just received one billion euros grant to research and develop practical uses for this material. This grant is provided by the European Union for the Future and Emerging Technologies. Well so what does this have to do with technology. Nokia a mobile phone manufacturer is prominent to utilise this material for use with their future mobile devices. Just think of all the open possibilities for this. This is what Henry Tirri, EVP, CTO of Nokia, and Tapani Ryhänen, Head of the Sensor and Material Technologies Laboratory for the Finns has to say:
Nokia is proud to be involved with this project, and we have deep roots in the field – we first started working with graphene already in 2006. Since then, we have come to identify multiple areas where this material can be applied in modern computing environments. We’ve done some very promising work so far, but I believe the greatest innovations have yet to be discovered.
Graphene happens to be an area where we, in Europe, have all the important players in the value chain who are ready to use it in applications. From that perspective, this is a very efficient and promising way of doing research investments for Europe...
During the last 18 months we have seen a tremendous effort to build collaboration between European academia and industry. Now we have all the ingredients in place to be globally successful. We believe that new two-dimensional materials will have an impact on industrial value chains in many ways, creating opportunities for new products, services and economic growth.

Nokia Confirms The Discontinuation Of Symbian

Last year at MWC 2012, Nokia unveiled what is still the best camera smartphone in the market currently. The 808 pureview with its awesome camera was at that time said to be one of the last symbian devices to be ever produced. But now with Nokia fully transitioning and focusing on Windows Phone they have officially confirmed that Symbian is discontinued which means that the 808 Pureview is the last of its kind and thus discontinuing the OS. Symbian has been around for about 2 decades and is one of the pioneers in the smartphone shaping how our smartphones looked like today. To me personally this is a very sad moment because symbian is actually a very good and solid OS but there is no adoption whatsoever.
During our transition to Windows Phone through 2012, we continued to ship devices based on Symbian. The Nokia 808 PureView, a device which showcases our imaging capabilities and which came to market in mid-2012, was the last Symbian device from Nokia.
As the Saying goes, all good things have to end

Nokia Has A Profitable Quarter With $585 Million In Profit, Breaking The Curse

Today is Januray 24th and it is the day in which Nokia reveals their quarterly earnings. Overall the results are positive with $585 million in profit on a 10.73 million quarterly revenue. This breaks the negative profit chain which has been hitting Nokia for 6 quarters in a row. But the bad news is still not ending as its return to a profitable quarter is mainly because of the success of their Nokia Siemens network which brought in quite a bulk of their total income. Additionally the YoY mobile growth dropped by 74% which is from 335.6m to 86.3; not just that, their smart devices sales also dropped by 81% which is from 35.1m to a mere 6.6m. Their average selling price for smart device and WP device also rose in which is also a factor. The bad news ends with Nokia will not be paying the shareholders dividens this year despite their profitability.
"We are very encouraged that our team’s execution against our business strategy has started to translate into financial results. Most notably we are pleased that Nokia Group reached underlying operating profitability in the fourth quarter and for the full year 2012. While the first half of 2012 was difficult for Nokia Group, in Q4 2012 we strengthened our financial position, improved our underlying operating margin in Devices & Services, introduced the HERE brand to expand our mapping and location experiences, and drove record profitability in Nokia Siemens Networks. We remain focused on moving through our transition, which includes continuing to improve our product competitiveness, accelerate the way we operate and manage our costs effectively. All of these efforts are aimed at improving our financial performance and delivering more value to our shareholders."Nokia CEO Stephen Elop

Samsung Overtakes Nokia In 2012 Cell Phone Shipments Giving Them The Top Spot & Breaking A 14 Year Record

This year has been a pretty rough year for Nokia and their stocks also hit a 14 year low. In the opposing side with Samsung, they are pretty much doing the opposite of Nokia by increasing the number of sales. The preliminary forecast rankings for the top cell phones manufacturers in 2012 is now out and for the first time in 14 years, Nokia steps down from the #1 spot with Samsung taking its place. The date shows that Samsung is expected to account for 29% of total cell phone sales and accounting 28% of the total smartphone sales. Nokia in the other hand is expected to account for 24% of total cell phones with only a mere 5% of the total smartphone sales. As the smartphone rage continues Apple and Samsung smartphones account for nearly 50% of the market with the other manufacturers having only a small piece.
