Asus Showcases Thunderbolt Riser Card

Asus launched their Z77 boards a few months back, and if you have been notice the motherboard properly you will find a TB_HEADER. This header is used to connect to a riser card which is sold separately. To date there is only two asus motherboards which has native thunderbolt ports.
Asus announced the thunderbolt riser card a Computex. This riser card is holding the Cactus Ridge 2C chip and requires a PCI-E X4 and a motherboard which has the header (refer the chart above). To be able to use the riser card you must connect the ThunderboltEX to the internal header of the motherboard this is so that the it can send/receive signalling information (for hot plug and pray events) from the motherboard BIOS, the header is powered so it also serves as power for the riser card. There is two ports on the ThunderboltEX riser card, one of it is the thunderbolt/mini display port and the other is a full size display port. The reason there is a display port is to receive display port signals from the motherboard so video out can be supported via the thunderbolt/mini display port.
If you think that 1 thunderbolt port is not enough asus has gotten ready another riser card which has two thunderbolt ports. This riser card is using the top of the line Intel DSL3510 Cactus Ridge 4C host controller. Like its similar single port sibling this riser card will need to be plugged in to the motherboard TB_HEADER for sending/receiving signalling information (for hot plug and pray events) from the motherboard BIOS and also additional power. This riser card has 2 thunderbolt/ mini display ports and 2 displays ports so that it receive display port signals from the motherboard.
Vr-Zone was at the Asus computex booth and they noticed that all of the AM3+ motherboards for Bulldozer FX/Phenom II processors have been refreshed. So they asked the product manager about details about the new refresh and they were answered " meet windows 8 WHQL requirements " without any major changes. Then they looked at the ROG Crosshair V Formula-Z (revised C5F), which was located at the bottom of a glass case. From what they know, the memory overclock capabilities of the board have been fine-tuned and storage options buffed up to two internal SATA ports and another eSATA and the onboard sound solution was also bumped to the Supreme FX III. And located below the lowest PCI-E slot is a thunderbolt header labeled TB_HEADER, which is to be paired up with their Thunderbolt EX riser cards. This can only mean that thunderbolt will be available in future Asus AMD motherboards.

HTC One X used as a hammer, NOT

There has been a video which is circulating the web and had catched attention of many smartphone users. This video is about the HTC One X used as a hammer, we've seen this being done to the Nokia Lumia 900. Based on the video the screen was used as a hammer to hammer a nail and it did not affect the screen whatsoever without a scratch. Let's talk about the screen on the HTC, firstly the one X is using corning's gorilla glass which has said to be scratch proof, but that dosen't mean it is unbreakable. One of the first scenarios the gorilla glass broke is on the Samsung Galaxy S III. So going back to the matter, a curious user in taiwan had some nails but did not have a hammer. So the user decided to use the One X as the hammer, after a few hits the beautiful screen was broken and there is a huge crack in the middle. And last but not least do not try what you see on the internet at home or you'll end up like this curious user.

Google Nexus Tablet image leaked

Phonearena receive a few images which show the press image draft of the upcoming Google Nexus Teblet which is manufactured by Asus. Many Rumors have been circulating around the internet saying that google is set to release their first Nexus branded tablet. According to rumors the tablet is slated to be a 7" Tegra 3 tablet which is pretty similar to the Asus Memo 370T. The Asus Memo 370T was revealed at MWC 2012 earlier this year and we know only know very less info on this tablet, the asus memo could just be the Nexus tablet because most of the specs is similar to the rumored nexus tablet. From the picture we can deduce that the nexus tablet will have a 2 tone design ( RUMOR), at the back there is a camera. The tipster mentioned the Quad-Core Tegra 3 as the CPU, 1gigs of RAM and as far as software goes it is slated to have JellyBean preinstalled out of the box, but some rumors say that jellybean will not be Android version 5.0 but will be Android Version 4.1, but these specs are just rumors and may or may not be true. Another thing is that the tipster also hinted that Android 4.1 is an update from 4.0 something like Éclair 2.1 was to Éclair 2.0. At the time the update brought new features as well a a complete visual change, and another thing is that Android version 2.1 brought Google earth to android. This scenario might just happen because google is going to release the new 3D maps today at their special event, there is also a possibility that this will be showcased at Google I/O at the end of this month.

Computex 2012 [Asus] [6/6/2012]

Today Asus showcased their top of the line card which is the Republic Of Gamer's MARS III. This card is like last year's MARS II but this year it is replaced with the GK104 chip. This is a dual GPU card like the GTX 690. Like the MARS II this card will be a limited edition card. One key thing that asus did not tell is the clock speeds of the card, judging by the name its given it should feature an overclock which is more than the pre overclocked GTX 680's out there. This card has 8GB of memory which is 4GB per GPU. The color scheme of this card is identical to the ones on Asus's Republic Of Gamers lineup of motherboards, this card also features a triple fan cooling design and a dual slot card size. To power this beast you are required to have 3 8-pin power connectors and the card can pull up to 525W of electricity when in load. Situated next to the power connectors is the fan override button which ramps up the fan to a 100%. There are 4 display outs which are three DVI ports and 1 mini display port (capable of daisy chaining). this card here we is still an early engineering sample and that they will still be making some tweaks to its PCB and cooler design before shipping sometime later this year. Pricing and availability of this card is yet to be known, but the price of the MARS III isn't going to be cheap as the MARS III was one of the most expensive cards you can get out there.
The Next product they unveiled is the Asus Z77 Wolverine motherboard. This board has a 40 phases of CPU VRM and to think that gigabyte's Z77X-UP7 was crazy. The VRM makes use of compact chokes and driver MOFETS are placed on each side of the PCB. Although this board has 40 VRM phases it only draws power from a single 8-Pin EPS power connector. The only conclusion is the concoction is reducing load per "phase", resulting in lower temperatures per driver-MOSFET, perhaps even letting the motherboard do away with with VRM area heatsinks altogether. Asus also insisted the CPU VRM on this board is still featuring DIGI+. Most of the features are similar to the P8Z77V-Deluxe; even the rear I/O and PCI-E lanes acre the same. So to wrap things up this is like a Z77 Deluxe board which opens even more overclocking headroom.

Computex 2012 [Asus Republic Of Gamers] [5/6/2012]

Asus showed their ROG Matrix 7970 in their booth at Computex 2012. This graphics card is said to have a very high overclock out of the box (≥25% overclock) by AMD AIB partners, this is so that the 7970 can be compared to the GTX 680. Some exclusive features are VGA Hotwire which can read and control voltages at a hardware level (must have a motherboard which has that header such as Rampage IV Extreme), TweakIT enables hardware voltage-speed control using buttons, one-push fan override, ProbeIT is voltage fan-speed monitoring points, a 20-phase Digi+ VRM with software control using GPUTweak software, and the software itself, which comes with a massive amount of tweaking options. This card is a triple slot solution like most of the ROG cards. This card takes power from dual 8-pin connectors which is a bump up from the dual 6-pin on the reference model.
This next image shows us the ROG Matrix 7970 on a asus motherboard. The interesting thing is not the graphics card but the motherboard the graphics card is on, the board is actually the Maximus V Extreme. This board has most of the features of the Rampage IV Extreme like probelt, sub zero senses, ockey and many more. Here is a picture of the whole board.

Computex 2012 [MSI] [5/6/2012]

MSI showcased quite a few motherboards this year at computex as well as the GTX 680 Lightning. If you have been following this site you would have known that last week MSI posted up some teaser photos of their upcoming Z77 motherboard. This motherboard is called the Z77 MPower which is part of the BigBang series of motherboards. The board has a black and yellow color scheme which matches perfectly with their lightning series card. Most of the features are similar to their Z77 motherboards. This board is powered by 16 phase PWM and has an 8-pin EPS power connector and an extra 6-pin power connector for the PCI-E lanes. This board has a  wifi and bluetooth module onboard; display outs include display port and HDMI. Finally if you look closely to the description next to the motherboard it states that OC in warranty, which apparently means if you fry your motherboard while overclocking the warranty will cover it.
Next is the X79 MPower which is the same as the Z77 but having the X79 chipset and LGA 2011 onboard as well as a extra pair of SATA 6G. The board has a 9+2 pahse power design; not much else info is given on this board.
Finally is the GTX 680 Lightning edition, this card is pretty similar to the 7970 Lightning card in terms of design. This card features the Twin Frozr IV cooler and Military Class III components. No specifications about this card have been revealed; the only thing we know is that it has the GK 104 chip with 2GB of GDDR5 memory. The card features then normal GTX 680 video outs ( Display Port, HDMI and 2 DVI ports), these connectors are all gold plated. In terms of power, this card has been bumped up from dual 6-pins to dual 8-pins for some serious overclocking; this card also feature the 3X3 voltage check points.

Samsung Galaxy S III Drop Test

There are two videos circulating the web which is about the samsung galaxy siii vs the iphone 4s drop test; one of them is from android authority and the other is from electronics break (squaretrade). Ok let's start with some info about both of the phones screen and body. Firstly the iphone, we all know that the iphone has a 2 glass panels front and back sandwiched together and around the phone is a metal band. Next is the Galaxy S III which has been launched since last week; this phone has a polycarbonate back cover and a chrome bezel around the edge of the phone and the screen is the gorilla glass 2 from corning. corning claimed that the gorilla glass 2 is 20% thinner than the original gorilla glass but still keeps it rigidity. Both of the videos show that the iphone 4s glass is clearly fragile and the screen shattered. But the interesting part is that the screen of the galaxy S III which sports Corning's new Gorilla Glass 2 cracked when dropped. This could not be a coincidence because both of the video clearly shows the screen cracking. I believe samsung is working on a solution for its valuable customers. Check out both of the videos below:

Computex 2012 [Gigabyte] [4/6/2012]

Gigabyte today showcased a few Z77 motherboards and their Ultra Durable 5 technology which is similar to MSI's Military Class III which is basically more better components, you can check out about ultra durable 5 technology below. The first two motherboards the showcased are thunderbolt ready motherboards paired up with their Ultra Durable 5 concept. The Z77X-UP4 TH and the Z77X-UP5 TH are a bit more powerful Z77X-UD3H and Z77X-UD5H respectively. The only different is that one is using Ultra Durable 5 and the other is using Ultra Durable 4 You can know if the motherboard is using ultra durable 4 or 5 by seeing the letters 'D' and' P', so if you have a D it is Ultra Durable 4 if it has a P it is a Ultra Durable 5 motherboard. Both of these boards have 2 thunderbolt ports. These two thunderbolt ports are also connected to the Intel Flexible Display Interface, which acts a mini display port video out and can be daisy chained between 6 devices provided it is a thunderbolt cable. The two also feature high-grade CPU VRM, which utilize new high-current chokes and PowIRstage IR3550 driver-MOSFETs, and a VRD12-compliant VRM controller, also made by IR.
The Next motherboard which Gigabyte showcased is the Z77X-UP7. This motherboard is the first to feature the Ultra Durable 5 Technology. This motherboard has the intel Z77 chipset and supports all sandy bridge and ivy bridge processors on the LGA 1155 package as well as dual channel DDR 3 memory. This board supports up to 4 way SLI or Crossfire X with PCI-E 3.0 which is powered by a PLX PEX8747 PCI-Express 3.0 bridge chip, which is wired to the PCI-Express 3.0 x16 link of the processor on one end, and gives out two PCI-Express 3.0 x16 links, which are distributed among six PCI-Express x16 slots using an array of lane switches. The board features DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, and D-Sub video out. That is not only all this board features a 32 phase CPU VRM which is really overkill and might be a selling point for some people. There are six SATA 6G ports, four SATA 3G ports, and one mSATA 6 Gb/s. The board also features dual gigabit Ethernet which one them are Intel's and the other is a Qualcomm-Atheros PHY, as well as 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, 8+2 channel HD audio (Realtek ALC898, 110 dBA SNR), and 10 USB 3.0 ports (six on the rear panel, four via headers). This board will launch later in the year.

Computex 2012 [ASUS] [4/6/2012]

Today is the day before Computex officially starts, but today there is a press conferences from asus. Asus showed us some pretty amazing new technologies. They have released some new things which is fairly new to the industry and some industry first technologies as well as products.
The most innovative product that asus showed us today is the Asus Taichi. There is a reason why this is innovative, it is because it has two touch screens. this is an ultrabook and if you close the lid it doubles as a tablet. It is going to run Windows 8 when it is released. This product is pretty similar to the zenbook; features include a 11.6"/13.3" two sided display, and ivy bridge core i7, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, an SSD for storage. Ports included with this laptop is two USB 3.0, a micro HDMI port, mini display port, a 5 MP rear facing camera as well as a HD front facing camera. This laptop also sports a chiclet keyboard which is backlit, the trackpad is also very big like the one on the zenbook. Asus calls the TaiChi "incredible fusion of notebook and tablet that remains as thin and light as the zenbook line". The two displays can either be mirrored or be independent display; to cut things short it is like having two screens on a laptop. If you close the lid it will perform just like a normal tablet, the dedicated windows 8 buttons are also present. This device is pretty similar to what tim cook said about combining a macbook with an ipad  'a toaster with an oven, it just forced convergence', we will have to see if it is really forced convergence in this device since this is what tim was describing. This laptop is also NFC capable and if you want to use android apps you can launch the apps through bluestacks app launcher. Pricing or availibility of this marvelous innovation is not yet been announced. We will get to see the TaiChi in action as Computex 2012 officially starts tomorrow.
The next thing which asus also showcased is the Asus Transformer AiO. This is a downright amazing product which is just brilliant innovation. If you ever had a dream of having an AiO and a tablet but couldn't afford both this is the thing you want to get. This transformer product really gives the best of both worlds because if it is in is AiO dock it is on windows 8 but the second you take it of the dock it instantly becomes Android 4.0 ICS, without any booting time you instantly can use use it after taking it out; this is like an oversized transformer pad which is very capable. Specifications include a 18.4" multitouch display paired up with an ivy bridge processor as well as a discrete graphics card. If you ever wanted a 18" tablet this is your thing. When you are in tablet mode the transformer AiO will use remote desktop interface to communicate to the dock and can function as a windows 8 PC. Nevertheless not much more info is given on this tablet/AiO.
The next thing that asus showed there today is the transformer book which is a windows 8 based laptop which can become a tablet. The transformer book has a detachable keyboard which has a few ports including USB 3.0. whereas the main body has some ports as well as the usual windows buttons. All those is powered by intel ivy bridge processors including i3, i5, and i7, it comes with 4 gigs of ram and Nvidia Graphics. This notebook will come with a 11.6", 13, and 14" full HD IPS display. The design top of the notebook is pretty similar to the zenbook's design.
Right before their press conference they announced the asus tablet 600. This tablet is running windows 8 RT and is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor paired up with 2 gigs of RAM. Other features are an 8 MP camera, 10" super IPS+ panel, and an optional keyboard dock. basically this is something like the transformer android series of products asus had.
The Final and last thing is the asus tablet 810 which is also a windows 8 which is similar to tablet 600, the only difference is that this is an intel based solution and runs on normal windows 8. The key difference is that this has an 11.6" Super IPS panel and comes with and intel atom processor. It still has that 8 MP camera like the tablet 600. This tablet is also compatible with traditional desktop apps in windows 8 for better productivity. This also comes with a wacom digitizer with stylus support. Another thing that stands out is that it is extremely thin, about 8.7mm thick and is thinner than the current ipad. This tablet will come with a 2-in-1 mobile dock which has a hidden hinge design.

Phone Tech Update [Ep 3]

This week there are a lot of interesting news in the mobile industry the first one comes from the android ecosystem. Android 4.0.X AKA Ice Cream Sandwich is reportedly reached 7.1% of all android devices. This has been a significant change since last month's percentage is 4.9%. This is in fact very relevant because in the past month manufacturers start rolling out updates for their devices and newer devices with Ice Cream sandwich being preinstalled begin to roll out like the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S III and many more devices. This did not stop gingerbread for increasing its market share; in fact gingerbread had an increase of 6% from the previous month's data. However although many are having Ice Cream Sandwich, it still does not beat Froyo which accounts 19.1% of android powered devices which mean almost 1 out of 5 android phones are running Froyo. To sum things up currently 75% of android phones are using Android 2.3.3 or higher.

Next up is market share of various Mobile Platforms and Mobile OEM's in the US. We'll start of with the smartphone platform first; Android is still keeping the lead of having the bigger chunk of market share in the US, it is noted that results are based on the 3 month average with month ending April. The report shows that in that 3 month period Google (Android) is up by 2.2%, where as Apple (IOS) also gained 1.9%. All those market share were took by RIM, Microsoft and Symbian. The most amount of loss is RIM, they lost 3.6% even more than what google gained. Now that cuts some of the gap between google and apple which is now 19.4% from 20.3%. Next up is Mobile OEM's, Samsung gained 0.5% and LG was down by 0.5% which was good enough for first and second place. Sitting in the third place is Apple with a 1.6% increase in market share. Next is Motorola which lost 0.7% and finally HTC was left with only 6% of the market share with a damage of 0.4%; it is noted that at the time the HTC series has not yet been launched in the US.
The Next big thing is Google Maps, Google has sent out invitations to the media. In the invitation it clearly states the time and date which is Wednesday, June the 6th which is next week and starts at 9.30 am. Looking at the title and background it briefly tells us the next dimension of google maps, this could mean that the next version of the popular map service could feature 3D view maps which might be incorporated throughout it or maybe we will get see maps in a more special way. If you have been around for some time you might have heard that apple is going to be changing the google map service on the next version of IOS with their own map service. At this point do not know whether apple is really going to change the map service or not, if it is true than google has a one week headstart since WWDC is on the 11th and google might steal some of apple's thunder.
As the 10th allthingsdigital conference is about to end, info about the relation between android and Chrome OS pops out along with news about Google Drive offline which is slated to be out within 5 weeks. The words came straight from Google’s Senior Vice President of Chrome Sundar Pichai, which was just black and white with not much more details. We are guessing that when you are offline you could view documents but not editing it or a offline office suite which is capable of editiing documents. Sundar Pichai said; "It's a natural evolution. Users like the familiarity. Sometimes wanting to be full-screen; if you're watching YouTube or Netflix, you want to be immersed. It's important to remember that we release a new version every six weeks; contrast that with Windows! Google Drive offline is coming five weeks from today.” Interestingly, Pichai spoke about convergence and how in the future we should be able to get to work without thinking about which software to install and where:
"Android is extremely successful, we couldn't be more proud of it. We have exciting steps ahead with tablets, too. There are many instances where people spend all of their time in the browser. The notion that, for the first time, your experience is in the cloud. You still run on a local device -- CPU, SSD, etc. -- but the notion that your computer is actually in the cloud enables zero administration. From a web console, you can deploy and manage apps -- there's no installing software, etc.

I think what is important between Android and Chrome OS -- with users, it makes sense. Look at Apple, there's MacBooks and iPhone, they use different operating systems. Convergence will happen, sure. But look at Gmail -- you go from a Chromebook to Android, and it just works."

Next up is the Nokia 808 Pureview, it seems that the phone which has had a lot of buzz in Mobile World Congress this year is ready to hit the shelves and to the hands of consumers. But sadly this is not the launch event but this is when pre-launch activities begin, so the launch date will not be next week. This phone was scheduled for a May release in Russia and India, and other markets will follow after that. However in the UK  smartphones are not likely to be in stock before the second half of July and eventually, U.S. consumers will be able to get one as well, but at full retail price.
According to numbers which are confirmed by Samsung; Their Galaxy S series have sold 52 million units excluding the Galaxy S III. the original Galaxy S sold 24 million units over the course of 2 years, whereas the Galaxy S II sold 28 million units in about half the time took by the original Galaxy S. The Galaxy S II is considered the best android handset produced to date. If we look to the Galaxy S III, it has already achieve over 9 million pre-orders according to samsung's executive marketing; if the numbers match it will be the fastest selling gadget of all time. The Galaxy S series does not get all the glamour because the Galaxy Note which is a whole new category called phablet which is a phone and a tablet. The Galaxy Note which is one of the phones with the bigger screen, 5.3" sold a total of 7 million units in the course of nearly 8 months.

MSI Teases Next Z77 Based Motherboard

MSI Computer U.S.'s facebook page uploaded two teaser photos of their upcoming Z77 motherboard. From the motherboard we can't quite point out what the model is but the motherboard version is stated there. If you reference the version stated there which is MS-7751 VER: 3.0, you will find out that it is using the same board as the Z77A-GD65; The PCI-E lanes are also similar. One of the interesting things is that on this board MSI is using the chipset cooler which is used on their X79 platform but in black and yellow. One more thing to note that this is one of the board's by MSI which has a matte black PCB and not the brownish-black PCB which most of their motherboards have. From the chipset cooler we can point out that the board has a black color scheme with and accent of yellow; which is something like the color scheme of their Lightning series cards. This board is most probably geared for 2-way SLI bacause the is not PLX chip in sight. Some people are saying that this could be part of the bigbang series of motherboards, but i think that this bard will indeed be a bigbang board but not the highest end. The reason why i said this will not be the highest end because the Bigbang marshal had 8 PCI-E lanes which is geared for 4-way SLI. If this is indeed part of the bigbang series then this board will indeed have a bigger brother, like the Asus Maximus V series the formula has only capabilities for 3 way SLI and the Extreme will hold the 4 way SLI capabilities. This board is most probably not geared for 4-Way SLI but it should most probably be geared towards extreme overclockers. This board is slated to be unveiled next week at Computex. We will be keeping you all updated as the time comes.

iphone rumors

At D10 early this week tim cook was replacing steve position at the on-stage interview at AllThingsD's annual D10 conference. One of the highlights of the event was that tim said that apple is doubling up the security on new apple devices. After that many leaks of the next gen iphone was circulating the web, so is tim doubling up the security or doubling down the security. This week there have been many rumors as well as leaks of the iphone.
One of the leaks which gives a bit more confirmation about the panel which was leaked a few days ago. There are pictures comparing the next gen iphone panel and the current iphone. The panel which was leaked shows that the front facing camera (facetime) is in the middle and above the handset. This is then backed up by a leaked blueprint or schematic of the next gen iphone panel and body. The leaked blueprint shows and opening for a screen about 4-inch. The blueprints also show that the body of the iphone is about 7mm taller than the current iphone but the width of the phone remains the same, this ensures the one hand use of the iphone.
If you have not been living under the rock for the past few weeks you will know that the apple is planning to change the 30 pin dock connector for the next gen iphone so there is more space inside for other things. This time around apple is like giving us this info directly by saying that they are hiring Connector Design Engineer and judging by the job offered by apple it is clear that apple wants to change the 30 pin proprietary dock connector.
The next thing is that a rumor has been spreading on the web saying that apple is planning to replace google maps in the next version of IOS with their own map service. This map service is said to have 3D views of maps as well as some special features. IOS 6 is allegedly almost at its final stages of development, Leaks then show hardware and software features as well as info about the phone that will carry it. First up being leaked is the Darwin Kernel Version 13.0.0 which is listing an ARM S5L8950X processor which is a made by Samsung with numbering higher than what we currently have in the iPhone 4S (40X) and the new iPad (45X). The next gen iphone is also said to have double the amount of ram the current iphone has which is 512MB.
