A few months back or just some time after the GTX 680 launched some rumors spread that AMD is working on a 7970 GHz edition so it can compete with the 680 in terms of performance. Like the 7770 GHz and the 7870 GHz the 7970 GHz will feature a higher clock speed than the original chip. The chip will be called Tahiti XT2 opposed to the Tahiti XT on the normal 7970. The 7970 GHz will be clocked at 1.1GHz@1100MHz which is 175 MHz more than the regular 7970, The GPU core voltage on the 7970 GHz edition will be lower at 1.020V opposed to 1.175V on the regular 7970. This is all achieved by AMD working with TSMC to refine the chip design. This means the Tahiti XT2 chip will be capable of higher clock speeds at lower voltages. According to sources this card will begin mass-production next week and will hit the markets by end of this month or early next month.
