We first had a look at the Maximus V Extreme at Computex 2012 a few weeks back. Now it looks like it about to hit the market. This board has some overclocking features similar to the Rampage IV Extreme. Some OC features include OC Key, Probelt, VGA Hotwire, Subzero Senses and many more. This board is Geared for the extreme overclockers and can support up to 4 Way SLI and even comes built in with thunderbolt. This board also comes with the mPCIe combo card for Wi-Fi 802.11 AGBN andBluetooh 4.0 and a mSATA. This board comes in an eATX form factor rather than an XL ATX form factor which makes this the biggest ROG board in the Z77 lineup.
Asus also included a PS/2 combo port so you can plug in your legacy keyboard or mouse. There are two video outputs on this board display port and HDMI. The ROG connect and BIOS flashback are also there in the rear I/O.
This being a Republic Of Gamers board Asus paired it up with a Cactus Ridge 2C DSL 3310 thunderbolt controller. Like their Premium board Asus also added extra USB 3.0 powered by an Asmedia USB 3.0 controller which is capable of UASP. On the Extreme board Asus opted to go for Realtek's ALC898 codec opposed to the Supreme FX III solution on the Formula and Gene.

The thunderbolt chip is not the only expensive chip on this board, as Asus paired the Extreme board with a PLX8747 multiplexerchip for 3 or 4 Way SLI. This 48-lane bridge chip handles 16 PCIe 3.0 signals from the CPU and can be configured for x16+x16 or x8+x8+x8+x8 for the GPUs. One new feature found on the Maximus V Extreme is "VGA Power Control", allowing the motherboard to directly interface with up to four sets of I2C controllers on the graphics cards to adjust voltages, OCP, LLCs and switching frequencies. Finally this board has a 8+4 Phase CPU VRM and not 40 phases like the Asus Z77 Wolverine.
